Basking in the Yuletide Spirit
As the year winds down and the world readies itself to embrace the warmth of Christmas, St. Bridget’s Convent Primary School glowed with the boundless joy of the season. Our celebrations began early, giving students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the festive traditions of the season before departing for the holidays.
The school premises were extravagantly adorned, delighting all who entered. Under the guidance of their teachers, students collaborated in weaving tinsel and fashioning handmade ornaments. They also poured their creativity into crafting decorations and personalised Christmas cards, transforming every nook and cranny into a festive haven. Amidst these creative endeavours, students exchanged small gifts as part of a Secret Santa activity. These tokens of friendship, simple yet meaningful, symbolised the love and camaraderie that the season inspires.
Before breaking for the holidays, students gathered for their end-of-year class parties, which encompassed laughter, games, music and festive treats. Yet, even amidst the merriment, the school remained grounded in its Catholic principles, embracing the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity.
Students were encouraged to deepen their faith, nurture hope and act with compassion. Charity, in particular, found expression through acts of generosity. Each class undertook a magnanimous gesture, assembling Christmas hampers containing dry rations for the school’s minor staff, whose unremitting efforts ensure the institution runs smoothly.
The spirit of giving extended beyond the school community, as students generously donated school shoes, stationery, and other essentials to impoverished families.
The much-anticipated, time-honoured Carol Service, a highlight of our school calendar, was as magnificent as ever. Held on the 7th of December, it was graced by Rt. Rev. Dr. J.D. Anthony Jayakody, Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo. In a poignant prelude to the Carol Service, the Bishop reverently entrusted the figurine of the Holy Infant to the awaiting manger.
The auditorium pulsed with a lively mix of classic carols and modern Christmas songs, interspersed with heartfelt readings and reflections. The orchestra’s rich symphonies elevated the buoyant mood, while the Bishop’s Christmas message reminded everyone of the true meaning of the season, leaving hearts touched and spirits uplifted.
A notable segment of the evening was the Nativity Play, enacted by our very own students. Beginning with Mary as a little lass, it beautifully traced her journey to becoming the mother of our Saviour. Angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim seemed to throng the air, as the play vividly brought to life that sacred night in Bethlehem over two millennia ago.
Adding a lighter touch, the 1st and 2nd grade students charmed the audience with their animated and delightful rendition of “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The staff members, too, enhanced the gaiety of programme with their harmonious singing of cherished carols.
A jubilant finale to the wondrous evening resounded with the joyous melody of “Feliz Navidad.”
We are thrilled to share that our Carol Service “Venite Adoremus” will be telecast on Verbum TV, allowing all to partake in the joy and blessings of this festive celebration from the comfort of their homes.
May this season bring peace and goodwill to all mankind, as the angels once proclaimed.
