Celebrating the Essence of Vesak

Celebrating the Essence of Vesak

This week, Sri Lanka bathes in the radiant glow of Vesak, a Buddhist festival where devotees commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. This religious and cultural festival is marked by various traditional activities such as observing religious precepts, singing Vesak devotional songs (bakthi gee), and organising alms-givings, known as ‘dansal’.

Perhaps the most visually striking aspect of the festival is the creation and display of Vesak lanterns and illuminated pandols depicting significant events in the life of Lord Buddha. In a heartwarming gesture, St. Bridget’s Convent Primary School embraced the spirit of the occasion, transforming its classrooms and corridors into a dazzling display of inclusivity and respect for diverse beliefs. Recognising the importance of Vesak for its Buddhist students and teachers, the school encouraged all students to participate in creating Vesak lanterns and decorating the school. This sent a powerful message of solidarity with the Buddhist community.

On 22nd May, students toured the school admiring the colourful lanterns and decorations crafted by their peers. These lanterns, in an array of sizes, shapes, and colours, prominently featured the hues of the Buddhist flag, adding to the school’s festive atmosphere.

Another key element of Vesak is the act of ‘dansal’, the free distribution of food. Capturing this spirit of giving, St. Bridget’s Convent organised a ‘biscuit dansal’, promoting goodwill and compassion among students.

Beyond the visual spectacle of lanterns and decorations, St. Bridget’s Convent Primary School serves as a shining example of harmonious coexistence. It creates a warm and  welcoming environment where diversity is celebrated and cherished.
