Following in the Footsteps of Rose Virginie

The birth anniversary of St. Mary Euphrasia (born Rose Virginie Pelletier) is always a deeply cherished occasion in our school calendar. This year, too, it was not simply a day of remembrance but an opportunity to translate her mission into action.

In the week leading up to her birth anniversary, our students were enlightened about the life and legacy of Rose Virginie. On the 31st of July, our school community gathered in prayer and thanksgiving for a special Holy Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Menaka Nanayakkara.

In a particularly meaningful expression of Rose Virginie’s spirit of love and compassion, we were privileged to host 33 little children from Kusum Sevana Preschool in Bloemendhal. These vibrant young ones are supported by a dedicated local haven that provides daily meals, early education and a safe sanctuary for families facing severe socio-economic hardships. Their presence at our school was especially fitting in light of Rose Virginie’s timeless words: “It is not enough that you love them; they must know that you love them.”
We opened our doors and our hearts to these little guests, welcoming them with warm smiles. Following the Holy Mass and formal celebrations, each guest was lovingly welcomed into a classroom, where our students had the opportunity to share joyful and memorable moments with them. It was a precious time filled with laughter, games, gifts and the simple delight of friendship.

The spirit of giving was also beautifully reflected in the generosity of our Past Pupils’ Association, to whom we extend our sincere appreciation for their incredibly generous gift of air conditioners for the Primary School Hall. This thoughtful contribution has transformed our hall into a more comfortable space where our Primary School students can come together to pray, learn and celebrate.

Indeed, it was a day that beautifully captured the spirit of the occasion. As we celebrated her birth anniversary, we were reminded that the most fitting way to honour the legacy of Rose Virginie is to continue the work she began: to recognise the dignity in every person, to reach out with compassion, and to ensure that those we love and serve truly know that they are loved.
