A Vibrant Celebration of Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2024
A wave of cultural vibrancy washed over St. Bridget’s Convent Primary School as we celebrated the Sinhala and Tamil New Year! From the moment students and teachers arrived, dressed in their beautiful traditional attire, the day promised to be a joyous one.
Fueling up for the festivities, students savoured a delicious and comforting breakfast of milk rice. This was followed by an exchange of traditional sweetmeats amongst friends, a gesture that reinforced a sense of community and joy.
The celebrations then moved to the school hall, where the lighting of the traditional oil lamp marked the auspicious beginning of the day’s proceedings. We were honoured to have Rev. Sr. Hilda Fernando as our esteemed chief guest, as well as the Religious Sisters of the Congregation.
A captivating video and informative briefing introduced students to the rich customs and traditions associated with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, enriching their cultural understanding.
The tasteful and extravagant decorations added a festive touch to every corner, and the air crackled with excitement.
With the melodious call of the Asian Koel echoing in the background, the lighting of the hearth marked a symbolic beginning, ushering in prosperity for the new year.
Students from Grades 1 to 5 revelled in the engaging games organised for them. Each grade took pride in presenting a lively dance performance, showcasing their talent and teamwork.
The infectious energy continued to permeate the air as the teachers themselves took centre stage, singing and dancing with unbridled enthusiasm.
Furthermore, games were thoughtfully organised for teachers, prefects’ parents, and the minor staff, ensuring everyone had a chance to participate in the merriment.
The day culminated in a spirit of unity and togetherness, reminding us of the importance of celebrating our heritage and fostering strong bonds within our school community.
Deepest gratitude to our Principal, Rev. Sr. Dilrukshika Silva, the driving force behind this vibrant cultural celebration.
St. Bridget’s Convent Primary School wishes everyone a Prosperous and Happy New Year!
